Tiong Bahru Bakery isn’t the only best café in the neighborhood where you can stay for a relaxing afternoon. Despite being one of the oldest residential communities in Singapore, the Tiong Bahru estate has gone through an urban transformation. Here are five of the best places to get your caffeine fix.

Forty Hands

Forty Hands

The store derives its name from the process of needing 40 hands to make coffee from growing beans to pouring it into a cup. Forty Hands has been open since 2010.

The items on the food menu are quite expensive but well worth the money to be paired with specialty coffee. Try the Smashed Avo for $20. You’ll get a sourdough toast with macadamia and pistachio dukkah, burnt feta, dill, pickled onion, feta yogurt and herb oil.

Plain Vanilla Bakery

There’s nothing plain about this pastry shop when you try their well-loved cupcakes. Among the popular variants include carrot, cinnamon brown sugar, cookies and cream, and milk chocolate chip.

Plain Vanilla Bakery only uses premium ingredients like French butter and pure Madagascar Bourbon vanilla. The shop doesn’t use preservatives and artificial ingredients. Unlike other stores in Tiong Bahru, customers can stay at the store until 9 p.m. daily.

Creamier Handcrafted Ice Cream and Coffee

The Golden Waffles with Ice Cream is a must-try item on Creamier’s menu. It costs at least $9.30 and you can choose from different flavors, including Sea Salt Gula Melaka, Earl Grey Lavender and Roasted Pistachio.

Don’t worry if your afternoon meet-up unexpectedly lasts well into the night. The shop is open until 10 p.m. daily.

Merci Marcel

This place operates as a brunch café during daytime, and as a restaurant and wine bar at night until 10:30 p.m. It’s also a good spot to hang out just in case a friendly date lasts longer than expected.

Try the French Toast Brioche for $17. If you’d like to have breakfast here, the place opens early at 8 a.m. daily.

TIANN’S

TIANN’S

Need to cut back on sugar? TIANN’s is known for serving gluten-free and low-sugar food made in-house. The signature waffles are a must-try for $19. You can visit the shop from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily except on Monday.

Conclusion

Where do you plan to go on your next visit to Tiong Bahru? You may have indulged in a cup of specialty coffee every week before the new normal. If you’re planning to reduce your coffee budget, it may be better to invest in an espresso machine.
